Buying a pet travel carrier with your cat or dog isn't as easy as looking for a product that advertises itself as such. Most will label themselves as perfectly appropriate for airline travel. We always recommend that you be careful, though. If you are traveling with a specific airline and purchasing the carrier for that occasion, contact the airline to find out their exact restrictions regarding travel with animals. One company's claim about airline compliance will not get you past the gate if the airline requires a specific size.
Not your average suitcase
The good news is that most pet carriers are designed for travel in cars, planes and trains. Make sure your carrier has super tough, reinforced stitching and nylon panels with plenty of mesh. Secured openings on both the top and sides are extra convenient. The top opening is great for getting the animal in there whether he likes it or not (unfortunately, this is sometimes the case when traveling with pets). A side entrance means that the dog carrier can be used as a kennel for your pet to go in and out of at leisure when you make it to your destination.
Another aspect to think about is how you can carry it. A folding pet carrier should include both hand straps and shoulder straps. Regardless of how light you think Fluffy is, during a lengthy trip, moving about with the appropriate food, water, dog bowls, and dog toys can be quite a strain. You'll want plenty of ways to adjust for your own comfort and that of your pet. |
